All pages in the Sutton Poyntz website must have associated entries in one or two of the Joomla Menus:

  • Main Menu and Main Menu compressed for all pages in the main website,
  • Acknowledgements Menu for the few pages in the Acknowledgements section,
  • Admin Menu for a few functional pages (such as Contact Us) that are not listed anywhere, or
  • Guidance for Authors Menu and Guidance Menu compressed for pages in the Guidance section.

Without such an entry, the page will not appear in the Site Map, and also it will not be possible to create a link to the page from other pages. The top one or two levels of the Main Menu are displayed as the Section Menu on every page in the website.

Adding a new page

When a new page is created, it must be added as a new item to the appropriate Joomla Menu(s), at a suitable place that needs to be chosen, near other related pages. This is done as follows:

  • Click on the appropriate menu name (Main Menu, Acknowledgements Menu, Admin Menu or Guidance for Authors Menu) in the Menus drop-down menu;
  • Click the New button;
  • Click in the Menu Item Type box, and select Single Article (found via the Articles option);
  • Click the Select Article button in order to find and select the new webpage;
  • Give the new item a short Menu Title; you do not need to set the Alias, which Joomla will set for you;
  • Click in Parent Item in order to specify where in the hierarchy of webpages this new page should sit;
  • Click the Save & Close page.

N.B. For map pages that are created using a GMapFP Article, follow the special instructions for that type of page.

For a new page in the main website or the Guidance for Authors section, a new item also needs to be added to the appropriate compressed menu, as follows:

  • Click on the appropriate menu name (Main Menu compressed or Guidance Menu compressed) in the Menus drop-down menu;
  • Click the New button;
  • Click in the Menu Item Type box, and select Menu item alias (found via the System links option);
  • Click the Select Menu item button, and then find and select the link you have just created for the new page (you can select Main Menu or Guidance for Authors Menu, and/or search for a name in order to find the link);
  • Give the new item a short Menu Title; you do not need to set the Alias, which Joomla will set for you;
  • Click in Parent Item in order to specify where in the hierarchy of webpages this new page should sit;
  • Click the Save & Close page.

Changing the order of pages

You can change the hierarchical order of links in a Joomla Menu, by selecting the appropriate menu in the Menus drop-down menu to display a list of items in the menu. It is sensible to limit the list so as not to display items at a lower level than the one you want to move; this is done by clicking Select Max Levels in Search tools. Now find the item you want to move in the menu list, and perform a drag-and-drop operation on the three-dot symbol next to the menu name If you wish to change the parent of some item, click the item name to enter the Menu Item Editor, where you can change the Parent Item.

Deleting a page

If a page is no longer needed, open the appropriate menu list by clicking in the Menus drop-down menu. You can either trash the item or unpublish it, by selecting the box next to the item name, and clicking the appropriate button. To actually delete items that have been trashed, click in the Select Status filter box (found via Search Tools) to select Trashed items. You can then click Empty trash.
