logo23 May 2025 - Soldiers and Poppies

You may have noticed on VE Day the two Remembrance silhouettes, Tommy and his sister Flora, standing outside the Mission Hall. We bought these from the Royal British Legion to be used in future Remembrance Sunday displays. One of them will be put on the 'village green' in Mission Hall Lane whilst the other will be located at the junction of Sutton Road and Plaisters Lane opposite the phone box.
Now we are asking for volunteers to help create a fitting tribute to the fallen and those still fighting - wherever that may be. One of our villagers has very kindly offered to support a poppy workshop where volunteers will learn to crochet or knit as many poppies as possible which we will attach to a net and hopefully create a display similar to the one below. If we exceed our expectations then we'll make a copy of the Tower of London display.
We have booked the Mission Hall from 10 am -1 pm on Friday June 13th for people to meet up with Rita Oxby to discuss the designs, sizes etc and hopefully create the first of many poppies to be used in the display. If you are interested in attending, or are unable to but are willing to take part, please let Jon waterman know at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Please bring along Poppy Red wool and crochet hooks or knitting needles if you have them. Rita will have a few hooks and needles available, as well as patterns and extra wool.
Thanks for joining the village volunteer team!
