Dear all,

Although I personally believe that the term ‘older’ refers to those at least 5 years older than me, Jez Cunningham, as perhaps an ‘older’ driver, has suggested that the following might be of interest to those of you in the same category.

But on a more serious note, Dorset Police have launched the Older Drivers Forum made up of experts in road safety from across Dorset, and businesses specialising in keeping older people on the road safely for longer. They also offer services and guidance for those motorists who feel that perhaps the time is right for them to retire from driving. They aim to support and engage with the older driver in order to provide those who wish to continue driving with practical and informative advice on ‘driving safely for longer’, to Inform about the risks faced and ways to reduce them with tips on hazard perception,to help to identify when the time has come to retire from driving, and to offer the opportunity to engage with some practical reaction testing games and tasks. Locally they will be holding a ‘Meet and Greet’ event on Tuesday 1 October at Tescos, Dorchester between 1000-1500 and a workshop on Wednesday 2 October starting at 18.30 until 21.00pm at Weymouth Safewise Centre. Peter Riley and Colin Marsh have both noticed that there has been an improvement in the bus service from the village, with the addition of a bus at 14.12, initially for the timetable period 23/9/19 to 20/12/19. The timetable shows the 4A leaving Weymouth at 09.30, 11.55, 13.55 and 16.00 and leaving Sutton Poyntz at 09.47, 12.12, 14.12 and 16.17 – though I must say that it passes my house, where I am beavering away on Newsbites like this one, at some pretty random times. It’s also surprising that First have introduced a new bus to the timetable without letting anyone know, so thanks to Peter and Colin for the information. On the principle of ‘use it or lose it’, it’s now up to us to support the service.

Regards
Chris
