Many of you will be pleased to know that the empty Rectory in The Weir, Sutton Road, is going to be a home for a refugee family as soon as it can be made ready.  You've probably thought to yourself "I can't take a family in my house, but I wish there was something practical I could do to help."  Now there is!
 
Help is urgently needed to clean, re – paint, furnish and equip the house as quickly as possible.  The house and garden are totally empty so almost everything is needed, from furniture to frying pans, from TVs to toilet brushes.  A task force is assembling this Friday morning.
 
Sue Sadler is co ordinating the effort so please contact her if you can donate items (she has a long list she can give you) or to assist in any way. suesaddlebags65@gmailcom
If you are unable to donate items or find the time to help, then money or cheques (made payable to Preston and Sutton Poyntz PCC) will be extremely welcome and can be left at St Andrew's  Church Rooms.

The NewsBites are coming thick-and-fast this week - almost a NewsFeast - here's another...
 
Richard Backwell tells me that there are 26 of us walking on Tuesday evening and the food order has gone into the Black Dog.
 
There is a slight chance of some light rain so as stated previously he would be grateful if those choosing not to walk would still honour their obligation to eat at the pub. Obviously if there are unforeseen circumstances i.e. illness etc then that is perfectly acceptable.
 
Looking forward to meeting up with you at the Black Dog between 6.00 and 6.15 pm on Tuesday evening.

Thursday June 2nd

Please join us at the Beacon to raise a glass (or more honestly a plastic cup!) in a toast to Her Majesty the Queen. The Beacon will be lit at 9.45pm along with more than 1,500 other beacons across the country.  Celebratory 'fizz' has been kindly donated by the Springhead.
 
Friday June 3rd 12 – 4 pm, Saturday June 4th 10am – 4pm. Jubilee Exhibition, Mission Hall
You can get a sneak preview of the exhibition by attending the Sutton Poyntz Society monthly coffee morning from 10.30!   But worry not, not only will you be able to view the collected memorabilia but tea, coffee and inevitably cakes will be available on both days.
 
Saturday at 10 am

Sunday June 5th Street Party. N.B. New Venue! 100 Sutton Road
Erica and Tony Ferrari have very kindly offered to let us use their garden for this event after an unforeseen problem with the Waterworks.
Gates open at 12.30. please bring your tickets to ensure entry (our stewards are not to be messed with!)  Remember to bring your own drinks and glasses. (We would also be very grateful if you would kindly take empty bottles home with you. Full ones we are happy for you to leave with us!)
Entertainment as you arrive and during the afternoon.  Loyal toast at 1.15pm. Carriages (!) at 6pm.

As Colin Marsh recently reported at the AGM, the Sutton Poyntz Neighbourhood Plan contained a number of aspirations, including one to "Establish a community monitoring and reporting scheme to ensure that public rights of way are maintained in accessible condition and are kept clearly signposted."
 
He now tells us that the village web site has been updated to provide a direct link to enable reporting of issues with public rights of way (damaged/missing signs, broken stiles, chained access gates, overgrown paths, etc). 
 
We are fortunate in having access to an excellent network of public rights of way in and around the village, and it is vital that these remain accessible.  If you identify a maintenance issue please report this directly via our web site by clicking on 'Living in Sutton Poyntz' then 'Countryside' where you will find a link 'Report a Problem'.  This will take you to the Dorset Council reporting site - it's very user-friendly and easy to navigate using a map to pinpoint the location.

Peter Jones sadly informed us at the AGM of the death of his dear wife Sue.
 
Peter and Sue are long-time residents of Sutton Poyntz and Peter runs the village Neighbourhood Watch.  Among other things, he was also responsible for the restoration of the 'finger post' at the junction of Plaisters Lane and Coombe Valley Road.
 
Sue's funeral will be at Weymouth Crematorium (DT4 0RR) on Thursday 26th May at 1215 British Summer Time.
No flowers but please wear something purple if possible.

Hello everyone,

And Hooray!  Richard Backwell is organising one of his famous village walks - on Tuesday May 24th.
 
This year's walk will start from the Black Dog car park in Broadmayne and will be a circular walk taking in the village of West Knighton. It is an easy flattish walk of about 3.5 miles with hardly a contour in sight.
 
If you would like to participate please register with Richard - his contact details are at the end...
 
Please be at the Car Park by 6pm so that once we have finalised the menus with the pub, we can commence the walk at 6.15.  We would hope to have completed the walk by 8.15 so that we could have our meals at about 8.30.
 

     MENU

         1 Duck and Port Pâté, red onion chutney, toasted sourdough and a salad garnish -- £7.95

         2 Homemade soup of the day with crusty bread -- £5.95

         3 Shetland Scallops, Bury Black pudding, pea purée, pickled apple and a mint oil -- £9.95

         4 Baked Avocado filled with spiced chick-peas, spinach and pine nuts topped with vegan lime and coriander mayonnaise -- £7.95

         5 Thai spiced crab-cakes served with salad garnish and a mango and coriander chutney -- £8.50

         6 Mini Chicken Caesar Salad topped with parmesan and herb croutons -- £8.25

            Sides, i.e. French Fries, Garlic Bread, Onion Rings and vegetables are also available.

Hello everyone,
 
Just a reminder that our next coffee morning is on Friday May 6th from 10.30, with the usual delights of home-made cakes. We will also be welcoming PCSO Mark Barton, a member of the police Safer Neighbourhood Team, who will be pleased to answer questions and who will bring a wealth of advice on home and personal security.
 
There will also be an opportunity to purchase your tickets for the Jubilee lunch on June 5th if you haven't already done so.
 
And just a brief mention of the successful AGM held on Wednesday 27th April. Apart from the business of the meeting, we  thank Dave Emery for news  about our Biodiversity group  and Colin Marsh, who  gave us an update on the Village Neighbourhood Plan.

tonys logo 27 April 2022 - Dorset Art Week Exhibition; AGM

Hello everyone,

Dorset Art Weeks will be showcasing local art from Saturday 14 May to Sunday 29 May when artists of all disciplines will be providing us with a glimpse of their latest work. Very locally, Roy Winstanley will be exhibiting his paintings and relief sculptures in the Mission Hall between 10.30am and 4 pm every day, except the starting Saturday and Wednesdays. As I am sure that you are already acquainted with Roy’s work you know it will be well worth dropping into the Mission Hall to see what is on display. He mentions enigmatically that the exhibition is part new and part retrospective art. As I’m not entirely sure what that means I  will have to go along and find out – which is perhaps what he intended.

Just one last reminder about the SP Soc AGM in the Mission Hall tonight. Doors open 6.30pm, you can pay your annual membership (cash only please £2 per person max £4 per household) then enjoy two talks from Dave and Colin at 7pm. A break follows for – yes, you’ve guessed it – nibbles and drinks before the AGM starts at 8pm.
