8 August 2022 - Street Fayre 2022
A message from the Chairman of the Sutton Poyntz Victorian Street Fayre:
I am pleased to be able to announce a final number issued from our Treasurer, the great news is we will be giving away just over £17,000 to local charities as a result of the Sutton Poyntz Victorian Street Fayre.
A big thank you from me as Chairman goes to the whole village, as again a lot helped in some way to achieve this success. I have recently sent out a draft of our charity list to the committee for their comments and once we have that list sorted we will hold a “giveaway” evening to hand out all the cheques. I will again announce that via the Newsletter.
I need to also say a big thank you to my committee who did a sterling job, everyone pulled together and contributed a lot to ensure a successful day.. Many of you will know we had a number of stiff challenges this year but we managed to deal with all of them to put on an excellent day.
We all realise it is very disruptive for the village but we had nothing but plaudits all day from young and old. Our Weymouth Mayor and Town Clerk also came to visit us on the day and both were very impressed by the strength of community in the village and how long we have put on this inspirational event.
Thank you again one and all.
Kind Regards
David Langridge

5 August 2022 - Annual Vegetable Show report - and some other stuff
What busy gardeners we have in Sutton Poyntz! (if the veg show is anything to go by)
There was a marvellous display of home-grown fruits, vegetables and flowers that had been lovingly cared for over the preceding months.
As ever, the highlight of the morning was the weigh-in of the famous 'Spud-in-a-Tub' competition, competing for the famous Des Evans Trophy. The tension built as the tubs were emptied and their contents weighed - in pounds and ounces this year - remember what they are? Family members tried to out-do each other and the winner (Julie Caswell) just beat Loop by a few ounces. Ros' mum, Joyce, soundly beat her and came in just a smidgen behind Julie. Trailing a little farther behind was Margaret but she definitively beat husband Ken. Collecting the wooden spoon this year, Mike Haine was at a loss to explain why his seed potato, still whole, had not spawned a single offspring, thus recording a net weight of zero. To save a little embarrassment we credited him with the 2oz of that seed, but he also picked up prizes for his tomatoes, courgettes and carrots so all was not lost.
For a change (not) the Ferrari clan went home with a fistful of first prizes but several of the less prolific entrants took the plunge and were very successful. Notably, Lizzie Bergman had optimistically asked to borrow a trailer to bring her cucumber - and it duly won the prize for the longest. Gail Harwood and Penny Fenwick earned their stripes by getting first prizes in 'Any other vegetable' and 'A Bunch of Flowers'.
The organisation was, as ever, spectacular and Chairperson Hilary won a well-deserved first prize for knowing her Onions - who knew what talent was hiding there!? The vote counting was ably performed by Liz and Chris Balfe - clearly no need to recount the votes for the Bunch of Herbs prize won by Liz. The Coffee and Cakes were delicious and a good morning was had by all. Thanks to all who helped and/or participated.
The full results (and those from previous years) can be seen on the village website here:

ANOTHER REMINDER
Coffee Morning at the Mission Hall at 1030 on Friday 12th August. Rumour has it that there may be Cheese Scones...

4 August 2022 - Missing cat
Would you all be so kind as to check in your sheds, garages, garden rooms etc for a missing black and white cat?
4 August 2022 - Coffee Morning on Friday August 12th
Just a short Newsbite to advise that the regular Coffee Morning on the first Friday of the month will exceptionally be on the second Friday in August. In other words - there's no coffee morning tomorrow!
There will be another Newsbite shortly to report on the Veg Show, but due to staff shortages, Covid, and the rail strike this has been a little delayed.

15 July 2022 - Normality resumes
Now that we have all recovered from an extremely successful and enjoyable Victorian Fayre, we can get back to our regular village social activities.
Let us hope that this glorious weather continues and that you have been watering those fruit and veg - ready for the Annual Vegetable Show on July 30th at the Mission Hall. Be there before 9.30 if you’re entering something – if you’re proud of your 12-incher there’ll be a line of people ready to check out your cucumber.
Due to a double booking, you will have to wait an extra week this month for your coffee morning on August 12th - but the cakes will be as delicious and fresh as ever! And we've heard a rumour that there may be a guest appearance of the cheese scones! Get there early!
And if you are receiving this newsbite and feeling guilty that you have not yet paid your annual Society subs., someone will be happy to relieve you of a couple of quid at the Veg. Show or the coffee morning.
'Stay Cool'
