tonys logo1 November 2015 - Reminder about two events this week

Good evening everyone,

A reminder about two events this week.

Firstly the inaugural lighting of the refurbished beacon will take place this Thursday, 5 November, between 7.30 and 8.00pm. No fireworks or refreshments planned (the beacon is not really suitable for roasting potatoes!) but an orderly retreat to the warmth of the Springhead is on the cards for afterwards.

Secondly there will be a Coffee Morning this Friday, 6 November, in the Mission Hall  between 10.30 am and Noon with Neighbourhood Watch as the theme, organised by Peter Jones. PC Clive Joyner will be there to answer any questions you might have.

Regards

Chris

tonys logo30 October 2015 - Closure of Osmington Hill

Good evening everyone,

Marc Cutler of the Highways Department of Dorset County Council has announced the traffic management plan for work on the A353 at Osmington Hill. Note that this includes a road closure.

The restrictions are

Convoy working in operation from Wednesday 4 November to the Friday 13 November 2015. (between 09.00 and 16.00 hrs according to the DCC Resurfacing Stakeholder letter cjh)

A road closure between 09:00 and 16:00 hrs on Monday 9 November to Wednesday 11 November 2015

If you would like further information:

  • ·       concerning access or the work being undertaken, please call Dorset Highways Operations Team on 01305 228100;

  • ·       concerning this notice please call Dorset Highways’ road space management team on 01305 221020;

  • ·       concerning these and other roadworks in your area visit: www.roadworks.org

Ian Bruce says "The notice shows a long diversion round the Relief Road out to Dorchester and then back via Broadmayne and Crossways.  However you can be sure most local traffic will turn into Sutton Road and cut through to Broadmayne via the top road.  DCC will probably put up a “not suitable for large vehicles” sign on the entrance to Sutton Road but if I was an owner of a car normally parked in Sutton Road I would find somewhere else to park it during those three days."

Chris

tonys logo26 October 2015 - Important - Village Fayre meeting

Good evening everyone,

Village Street Fayre Open Committee Recruitment Meeting

Tuesday 3 November at 7.30

in The Blue Duck Bar at the rear of Springhead

Guy Bridge, the Fayre Committee Chairman says:-

"This is an open meeting to discuss options for the Village Street Fayre planned for Sunday 26 June 2016. The first question may be "Do we actually hold another Street Fayre?"

If the answer is  "Yes" then we need to form a committee ready for the first of our monthly meetings later in November, so if you are interested in finding out more please come along on Tuesday.

There will be past committee stalwarts present, but if you are new to the village or feel you could have a role to play then come and see us for this very relaxed meeting, which is all about input from everyone on how we progress.

Hopefully we will have lots of helpers on the day, but this meeting is really about the committee that organise the whole event.

Get yourself a drink and join us in the new Blue Duck Bar, which the Springhead have very kindly said we can use.

Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you."

You will not be committing yourself to anything by dropping in to the meeting, so why not go along, see what Guy has in mind and offer your own opinions - and all over a convivial drink or two.

.Regards

Chris

tonys logo21 October 2015 - New village noticeboard

Good evening everyone,

Do not despair if you are not good with computers, take comfort that there's someone even worse - me!
After some patient explanation from Bill, this should now reach you as I intended.

Sutton Poyntz Society - New Village Notice-board

The society wants to honour the bequest from John and Lesley Wilson’s family to erect a new notice-board by the pond.

At the same time we would like to take the opportunity to make the top of the pond area look cared-for, while keeping all the existing car parking spaces.

The present suggestion is to put the notice-board up against the wall, and build some railway-sleeper planters to keep the parked cars at a safe distance. At a later date we could also include a bench or two.

If you have any constructive comments then please get in contact with any committee member or via the Sutton Poyntz Society web site by Tuesday 10 November.

With thanks to Jez Cunningham for his description and diagram (attached).

Regards

Chris

tonys logo17 October 2015 - History Evening date correction and Coffee Mornings
Good evening everyone,

Just to demonstrate  my comprehensive knowledge of what is going on, Bill Egerton has returned from foreign parts to tell me that the date I gave you for the History Evening Presentation was incorrect!

Freddie Litschi's slides are actually going to be shown on Wednesday 28th October in the Mission Hall at 7.30 pm. My apologies for that, but the event will still be as interesting, showing Freddie's unique pictures taken over the years. Do come along to see Sutton Poyntz as it was, and to hear about the personalities and events on display. You might be able to add some comments of your own, all of which will be a valuable addition to the historical record of our lovely old village.

As a follow on to my problem with dates, I missed the first winter coffee morning because I hadn't put the date in my diary! However I will be at the second one, on Friday 6 November in the Mission Hall  between 10.30 am and Noon when Neighbourhood Watch will be the theme, organised by Peter Jones with PC Clive Joyner in attendance. Future coffee mornings are on

4 December, when Simon and Dot Emblen will be displaying some of the interesting finds dug up in their garden

then 8 January (avoiding 1 January, New Years Day) when a representative of the new Portland Jurassic Project will be coming along.

5 February and 4 March are the last two

The coffee mornings are always a good chance learn something new, to catch up on what old friends have been doing and enjoy a cup of coffee and delicious cake. The cost is still only £1.50, but enjoy this while you can, for it may rise in the New Year.

 Regards

Chris

tonys logo16 October 2015 - Forthcoming events

Good evening (or whatever time of day it is as you read this),

Bill Egerton is planning a History Evening on Friday 23 October at which he will be showing slide pictures taken in and around the village by the late Freddie Litschi, who was devoted to Sutton Poyntz. It will be worth attending because not only are the pictures unique, but it is hoped that some of our longer standing residents will be able to put names, dates and locations to them, and in the process provide interesting and amusing anecdotes about some of the illustrated characters and events that were recorded in times past. The likely start time is 7.30 pm at the Mission Hall, so put the details in your diary to make sure you don't miss it.

The refurbished beacon has been re-installed in its rightful place on the hillside - full details to follow in the next Newsletter. With the addition of paper, kindling and firewood (and a naked flame) the inaugural  lighting with will take place on Thursday 5 November between 7.30 and 8.00pm. Although there are no fireworks planned at the site, those on Weymouth Beach are due at 7.45 pm, so we should be able to enjoy them from a safe distance. Bring your own refreshments if you think you will need them, but no doubt many will prefer to retreat to the warmth of the Springhead afterwards. See you there.

Regards
Chris

tonys logo24 July 2015 - Sad news

A Newsbite in February let everyone know about Lesley Wilson's death and funeral arrangements. Tragically her husband John died yesterday morning in hospital after a short illness, a second great loss in a very short space of time.  The family would love to see as many of John and Lesley's village friends as possible at his funeral -  4 pm on Thursday July 30th at the Weymouth Crematorium - and afterwards at his house or at The Springhead (to be confirmed).

tonys logo9 July 2015 - Saturday Cream Teas

Dear friends,

A reminder about the cream teas in the Mission Hall garden (or the hall if wet) this coming Saturday, 11th July between 2:30 and 4:00pm. The cost per head is £3, the same as last year, which makes it very good value indeed. No tickets or booking, just turn up on the day to enjoy this quintessential English event.

Best wishes,
Chris
PS if you have asked to have your email address changed, please be patient. I am still learning how to do this!
