1 June 2017 - Summer Coffee Morning
Dear all,
A reminder that the third Summer Coffee Morning will be held tomorrow, Friday 2 June, in the Mission Hall between 10.30 am and noon. If it turns out to be another hot morning (or even if it doesn't) there will be tea to quench your thirst, with the alternative of coffee, plus homemade cake to keep up your energy levels and all sorts of interesting people to chat to - well, me, anyway. This is always a very pleasant way to spend a summer morning so make sure you don't miss it.
Regards
Chris

Dear Mr Hubbard,
Please would you distribute this poster advertising an event the South Dorset Ridgeway Project are putting on at the Mission Hall on Friday the 26thMay from 10-16.00.It is essential that people book with me because we will be moving out into the landscape to conduct some archaeological recording in the afternoon. We prioritising local people so it would be helpful if a postcode could be provided at the time of booking.
The purpose of the event is to share archaeological knowledge, both information that the ‘experts’ think is important and we would like to gather community interests and priorities. It is also hoped that participants will be inspired by this event to conduct further recording of archaeology in the landscape.
Kind Regards,
Hayley Roberts

17 May 2017 - Village walk start directions
Dear all,
A little bird has whispered in my ear that some intending village walkers this coming Sunday, 21 May, are not too sure where it begins. The grid reference of the start was given as 846865 in Wool, but it has been pointed out to me that this doesn't help if
1. You haven't got the right map
2. You don't know what a grid reference is
3. You have trouble with numbers
4. You have none of these problems but just don't have the time to sit down and work it out
So if you fall into any of these categories (or even if you don't) here are some alternative directions.
Head for Wool until you come to the Winfrith Business Park roundabout (which, if my memory serves me correctly, is the second roundabout after leaving Sutton Poyntz on the main road). Anyway, straight on at this roundabout (second exit) into Wool until you come to some shops on the right hand side of the road (about ½ mile). Just before these shops is Colliers Lane. Turn right into Colliers Lane and, passing the Village Hall on the left continue to the T junction with High Street/Lulworth Road (here I'm relying on advice, as I don't think I've ever been all the way along the Lane). This junction marks the start, so park nearby and join the throng of villagers wondering if they have the correct spot.
Fear not, for after this, Richard Backwell, our own experienced Himalayan guide, will be in charge.
See you there at 10 am, unless I get lost.
Regards
Chris
PS The weather forecast is good
15 May 2017 - Reminder of two imminent events
Dear all,
Just a reminder about two imminent events.
The Village Garden Party is this Saturday, 20 May from 11am to 3pm in the Rectory Garden in aid of our four local halls - St Andrew's Church Rooms, Scutt Hall, the Mission Hall and Preston Village Hall. This promises family fun and entertainment throughout the day, including music from the 'Dorset for Singing' Choir, children's activities and numerous stalls. Refreshments of all sorts and a barbeque will sustain the inner person and all this for only £1 per person entry, free if under 16. Do drop in, enjoy yourself and help maintain our local venues.
The following day, Sunday 21 May, marks the Sutton Poyntz Society Walk - approximately 7½ miles starting at 10am from near the end of Colliers Lane in Wool (GR846865); plenty of parking is available there. Walk leader Richard Backwell promises an interesting walk with a coffee stop mid morning and an easy amble to Lulworth Castle to partake of your packed lunch (you can end your walk here and be picked up later if you wish). After lunch, the walk continues via the Tower and a different route across the fields back to Wool. I'll see you there.
Best regards
Chris
30 April 2017 - More upcoming events
Dear all,
Some more forthcoming events for your consideration:-
The Bournemouth Male Voice Choir with the Bestwood Male Voice Choir, who hail from Nottinghamshire, will be giving a joint concert in St Andrew's Church on Saturday 13 May at 7pm. Tickets cost £10, which includes refreshments, and can be obtained by contacting Harry Barnes (833242 or by email
The Village Garden Party is on Saturday 20 May from 11am to 3pm in the Rectory Garden (for newcomers that's down the lane alongside the Scutt Hall). The proceeds from this annual event (if there wasn't one last year there will probably be one in 2018, which makes it annual) will go to support the four local halls - St Andrew's Church Rooms, Scutt Hall, the Mission Hall and Preston Village Hall - a most worthwhile cause. There will be family fun for all, with entertainment throughout the day, including music from the 'Dorset for Singing' Choir and activities for children. In addition there will be numerous stalls with books, jigsaws, arts and crafts, cakes, plants, quality toys and children's clothes. As the event spans lunch time, to keep you going there will mouth watering refreshments of all sorts and a barbeque. And to encourage you even more, entry is only £1 per person, with children under 16 free (no chance of me bluffing my way in for nothing then!). The rectory Garden is a wonderful setting for this event, so do drop in and sample the delights on offer - and help maintain our local venues into the bargain.
Then, to exercise away all the excesses of the Garden Party, the next day, Sunday 21 May, marks the Sutton Poyntz Society Walk - approximately 7.5 miles starting at 10am from near the end of Colliers Lane in Wool (GR846865, for those of you not Ordinance Survey challenged) where plenty of parking is available. Walk leader Richard Backwell says that "the route passes Wool Church, goes through Cole Wood to Woodstreet Farm, crosses Coombe Heath to Shaggs Lake where we will break for coffee. From here it is an easy amble to Lulworth Castle where we shall eat our packed lunches. Those wishing to stroll in the Castle grounds, go into the Castle itself or visit the Chapel could end their walk here and be picked up later. After lunch, the walk continues up to the Tower and arrives back at Woodstreet Farm via Kimberts End and Haremere Wood. A different route from the farm takes us across the fields back to Wool." Sounds a lovely way to spend a day; a bit like a Summer Coffee Morning on the move! Make sure you go along.
Best regards
Chris
27 April 2017 - Scutt Hall Plant Sale & Summer Coffee Morning
A couple of forthcoming events for your consideration:-
The annual Scutt Hall Plant Sale is imminent - this Saturday 29 April to be precise, between 10a.m. -12 noon in, as you've probably guessed, the Scutt Hall. Stallholders will have on sale a wide selection of plants for gardens, patios, tubs and baskets. Refreshments will also be available. Entry is free but donations to Julia's House Children's Hospice would be much appreciated.
The second Summer Coffee Morning will be held on Friday, 5 May in the Mission Hall between 10.30 am and noon. There will be tea to revive the spirits (or coffee if you must), homemade cake to strengthen the inner person and stimulating conversation to develop the intellect. I have not heard if any sort of theme or presentation is planned, but even if not it will be a very pleasant way to spend a morning. See you there.
Best regards
Chris
25 April 2017 - Defibrillator training
Dear all,
As you are no doubt aware, the Village has its own Defibrillator, which can be used to shock back into action the heart of a person that is suffering from a heart spasm and hopefully save their life after a 'heart attack'.
Simon Allison, our local First Responder, has kindly been giving training sessions, in CPR and the use of the device, in the Mission Hall. These don't take long, thirty minutes in fact, and the next sessions will be tomorrow, Wednesday 26 April at 6.30pm, 7pm, 7.30pm, 8 pm and 8.30pm.
There's nothing too difficult - if I can do it, anybody can - so please do make the effort to go along tomorrow at one of these times. After all, the life you save might be that of a loved one.
Best regards
Chris
18 April 2017 - Sutton Poyntz Friday Art Group Spring Exhibition
Dear all,
A reminder that the Sutton Poyntz Friday Art Group Spring Exhibition is this Saturday and Sunday, 22 & 23 April at the Mission Hall from 11am to 4.30pm each day. Entry costs nothing, coffee and cakes are available and you will have the chance to vote for your favourite picture - just like the European referendum though with a more amicable outcome. The ladies will be pleased to see you, and after viewing the pictures on display I'm sure that you will be equally pleased you went along. Don't miss it.
Regards
Chris
