13 January 2019 - Horse Racing comes to Sutton Poyntz

Dear all,

I have it on good authority that you are ensured an evening of fun at the Sutton Poyntz Society's Night at the Races, especially as there is no chance that you will lose your shirt - or blouse. This will take place on Saturday 16 February in the Mission Hall starting at 7.30pm. Prestigious races from around the world will be uploaded onto the laser display screen, and you will be able to place bets, using the specially provided SPSoc currency, with expert bookmakers ready to take your 'money'. There will be a pause in the excitement for a fish and chip supper (vegetarian option available), and you can bring your own favourite tipple - being careful not to take so much as to cloud your judgement of the horses in the parade ring. The cost is only £10 per person, and you book your place (so numbers are known for the catering) via This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Pay any committee member thereafter. I have won millions over the years with my system, which, for your eyes only, is to put your 'money' on any horse with a colour in its name. You can't go wrong. 6 January 2019 - Supper evening to help Okhle Village in Nepal

Dear all,

Richard Backwell is organising a fundraising evening to help the area around Okhle Village, which, like a lot of Nepal, is still struggling to recover from the catastrophic earthquake in 2015. The event will take place in the Mission Hall on Wednesday 27 February at 7.30pm and consist of a brief talk on how the Okhle Village Trust started and what has happened to Samjur School since the earthquake. There will then be 30 minute film illustrating the work of the Trust and local Rotary Clubs in supplying water to the area. This will be followed by a casserole/chilli/curry with jacket potatoes supper - bring your own wine, beer, soft drink or whatever takes your fancy. The cost is £10 per head, and tickets will be on sale from 10 February from Ruth Davies 833798 or Richard Backwell 833349. Sounds a great way to support the marvellous efforts being made to help this area of Nepal, and have supper in good company. What could be better? See you there.

3 January 2019 - Coffee morning reminder

Dear all,

I sent this out a couple of days ago, but in case you missed it, the next in the series of Winter Coffee Mornings is tomorrow, Friday, 4 January in the Mission Hall between 10.30am and noon. The weather has turned colder recently, so earn yourself a warm welcome at this Friday morning get-together. For £2.50 you get tea (or coffee), a delicious slice of homemade cake and good conversation, so make a point of being there. It's a great opportunity to tell everyone about the £40,000 diamond ring you gave to your loved one as a Christmas present. And the wonderful T-shirt you received in return!

30 December 2018 - Things happening next year

Dear all,

The Sutton Poyntz Women's Institute. The first meeting of the SP WI in the New Year is on Wednesday 2 January in the Mission Hall between 2pm and 4pm. This will be a friendly, informal games afternoon with a Bring and Buy Stall all rounded off with a cream tea. And to keep that friendly atmosphere there isn't even a competition this month, so do drop in - you will be sure of a warm welcome as a regular member or guest.

The Chatty Craft Group. This cheerful and welcoming group resumes its regular meetings on Monday, 7 January in the Mission Hall between 10am and noon, and every Monday morning thereafter. Following their rave reviews at the WI Christmas party the ukulele practitioners will be taking a break, but there will be many more craft or other skills on show. So why not come along to have a go yourself, watch others 'at work', or even just to enjoy the conversation and refreshments. Do drop in and see them, and make a New Year resolution to attend every Monday, starting on the 7th.

The next in the series of Winter Coffee Morning is this coming Friday, 4 January in the Mission Hall between 10.30am and noon. The weather is unseasonably warm, equally as warm as the welcome at these Friday morning get-togethers, so for tea (or coffee if you must), a delicious slice of homemade cake and good conversation make a point of being there. It's a great opportunity to tell everyone about that £40,000 diamond ring you received as a Christmas present, and if that has left a bit of a hole in the family finances, it costs only £2.50 to get in.

11 December 2018 - Telephone Box, Carol Service, Road Closures and Christmas!

The Village Telephone Box

I am sure that by now you will have seen the vast improvement in and around the village owned telephone box opposite the Cartshed. Colin and Rita Oxby cleaned and painted the outside beautifully in shiny look alike BT red, Ray Aggett constructed a new planter which Jez Cunningham and Bill Davidson installed and filled with plants. Not to be outdone, Hilary Davidson has decorated it with Christmas lights! Many thanks to them for their considerable efforts. The full story of what it took to get to this satisfactory conclusion will be revealed in the next Newsletter. Don't miss it!

In the meantime, if you have, or know of someone who has, a bookcase that can be adapted to fit the box in order to hold books, leaflets etc, please let me know.

Carol Service

The Mission Hall Trust Carol Service will be on Monday, 17 December outside the Mission Hall at 6.30pm, when we will be accompanied by the Salvation Army Band. Afterwards there will be seasonable refreshments - which certainly means a mince pie or two will appear - in the Hall itself. The combination of the Salvation Army Brass Band and carols in the open air is always a lovely start to the festive season. Make sure you don't miss it.

Advance warning of road closures in New Year

You may already have received a letter about this, but better told twice than not at all. Wessex Water will be completing the water main improvement work that they started round about this time last year. The work will take place as follows:

Wednesday 2 January to Friday 18 January

There will be traffic lights on Preston road from Preston Village Hall to the Sutton Road junction. There will be manual control of the lights at peak times.

Monday 21 January to Sunday 3 February

Sutton Road will be closed overnight (10pm to 6am) from Preston to Verlands Road, but access will be maintained to Verlands Road.

Monday 4 February to Sunday 15 February

Sutton Road will be closed overnight (10pm to 6am) at the junction with Puddledock Lane, but access will be maintained to Puddledock Lane.

For the Sutton Road closures a diversion route will be in place, and I am reliably informed that this will not take us any further north than Yeovil. You are also asked not to mention the work going on at Westham Bridge!

21 November 2018 - Free coffee and cake

Dear all,

This coming Saturday, 24 November, Karen invites everyone to free coffee and cake in the Springhead. She is doing this in memory of her Dad, and would be grateful for donations in support of the Fortuneswell Ward at Dorchester Hospital. So drop in anytime between 10am and 2pm on Saturday, 24 November, to enjoy the cake, coffee and company. It's a great venue and a very good cause.

Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard to make the Children in Need function at the Mission Hall last Saturday, 17 November, such a resounding success. And of course thanks to everyone who turned out to support the event. The money is still being counted, but it is heading for over £700. which is a tremendous result for a great cause. The next Newsletter will have full details.

16 November 2018 - Children in Need tomorrow

Dear all

A last minute reminder about tomorrow's Children in Need event in the Mission Hall. Between 11am and 4pm, coffee/tea and homemade cake will be available. Plus, if you need something more substantial for lunch, from 12.30pm and 2pm they will also be serving homemade soup and Balfey's bread rolls. You can drop in for morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea - or even all three. Maureen hasn't told me the cost which means either she has forgotten to ring me or you will be invited to make a suitable donation. Either way, all the money raised goes to a great cause and last year, with your generous support, they raised nearly £800. Let's see if we can top that this time.

10 November 2018 - Children in Need

Dear all

A reminder about Children in Need event in the Mission Hall on Saturday 17 November. This takes place between 11am and 4pm, with coffee/tea/homemade cake available all day, plus, between 12.30pm and 2pm, lunch featuring homemade soup and bread rolls. It's a sort of coffee morning and coffee afternoon rolled into one, with a good lunch to keep you going between the two! Maureen hasn't told me the cost yet, but I am sure it will be great value for the money, and it's all going to an excellent cause.
