23 July 2018 - Village Veg Show 4 August & Alfresco Lunch 5 August
Dear all,
The keenly contested annual Village Vegetable Show will take place on Saturday 4 August at the Mission Hall, under the stewardship of Jez Cunningham.
Starting at 9.30 for competitors to display their wares, members of the public can vote from 10.30 to 11.30.
All the traditional categories will be in evidence, Longest runner bean; Longest cucumber; Heaviest marrow; Selection of herbs; 3 carrots; 3 tomatoes; Single lettuce; 3 courgettes; 3 beans (any kind); 5 soft fruit (same or mixed); Anything grown in the greenhouse; Any vegetable not already listed; A bunch of flowers; A bunch of different leaves.
There will be a nominal charge to enter any number of classes, and proceeds go to charity. The electronic blackboard will record the result of the famous “spud in a tub” competition for the Des Evans trophy, which is awarded for the heaviest quantity of spuds grown in a tub. No quarter is given in this class, and the competition is fierce! The prize giving will start at 11.45. Jez, your Master of Ceremonies, should have the answers to any queries (835811 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ). Cost of entry last year was £3 per person, which included a cup of tea (or coffee) and a piece of delicious homemade cake. Hopefully the same will be on offer this year as staring at vegetables always makes me thirsty, as no doubt the plants have been with the lack of recent rain. See you there.
Following the rigours of the Vegetable Show there will be time to relax at the Alfresco Village Lunch organised by the Mission Hall Trust. This starts at 1pm the next day, Sunday 5 August at, as you might expect, the Mission Hall, hopefully out in the orchard. As this will also be a celebration the 50th birthday of the Sutton Poyntz Society, the Society will provide a drink of Pimms on arrival, followed by a main course, dessert, then tea (or coffee) and a piece of birthday cake. All this for just £13/person - cheap at twice the price. Bring your own bottle of wine, beer, absinthe or whatever is your personal preference and enjoy good food plus good company (for I will be there) in an idyllic setting. Tickets can be obtained from Maureen (835533), and they are selling fast!
Regards
Chris
23 July 2018 - Cream Teas Fundraiser
Dear all,
Anna Johnson is organising cream teas at the Mission Hall this Wednesday, 25 July, between 2:30 and 4:30pm, as a fundraiser for her volunteering trip to Thailand. Full details of this are in the attached poster. She also has a JustGiving page at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/anna-johnson26
Cream teas in the Mission Hall orchard are always a delight, and the weather looks set fair, so drop in and support Anna on her trip.

Chris
12 July 2018 - Cream Teas Saturday
Dear all,
A reminder about the Cream Teas in the Mission Hall garden from 2.30pm this coming Saturday, 14 July, at only £3/head. I am sure that Hillary has booked some fine weather for the afternoon, so what could be nicer than enjoying good company plus a scone, cream and jam (in that order, of course) with a refreshing cup of tea under a gazebo in the garden. Try and ensure you support this village event.
Also some advance notice about two other exciting happenings, the Village Vegetable Show on Saturday 4 August and a special event on Sunday 5 August to celebrate 50 years of the SP Society. More details to follow shortly, but put the dates in your diary now.
Regards
Chris
7 July 2018 - Cream Teas at the Mission Hall
Dear all,
The next information I have from an unimpeachable source, so you better believe it!
Cream Teas will be available in the Mission Hall garden (the Mission Hall itself if weather is inclement) from 2.30pm on Saturday 14 July. This is being organised by Hilary but she really could do with some help. Contact her on 834479 if you can be of assistance. Hopefully this weather will continue - or return for the day - and in the past the Cream Teas have been a lovely village event, especially at the bargain price of £3/head, so make sure you mark it in your diaries.
Regarding the matter of the closing of Plaisters Lane.
Cllr Ian Bruce received a Dorset County Council Public Notice saying "All vehicles will be prohibited from proceeding along PLAISTERS LANE, SUTTON POYNTZ, WEYMOUTH from the junction with Coombe Valley Road to the junction with Sutton Close, a distance of approximately 700 metres. It will come into operation on the 7th July 2018 and remain in force for 5 days. However it is anticipated that the works will be completed by 08th July 2018. The closure will be in operation between 09:30hrs and 15:30hrs daily."
It went on to say "Any person who uses or permits the use of a vehicle in contravention of the order will be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £1000."
Realising this could inconvenience a lot of villagers he forwarded it to me and I immediately sent out a Newsbite. However villager Derek was concerned about vehicular access and fearing a large fine if he exited his drive, contacted DCC who had no record of the work! I immediately emailed Ian, who equally promptly asked DCC for an explanation asap. This was at 18.23 on Wednesday and the following Thursday morning at 08.55 he received further, and incorrect, DCC confirmation that the work was going ahead as their Notice specified. Luckily I was not sent this, so in the absence of information I rang the number given for the contractors doing the work (HSC Solent). This number was unobtainable! So I contacted DCC where the lady also could not find a record of the work, but gave me another number for HSC. This HSC number also had no record of the work, but referred me to their Andover office - which had recently moved, hence the original wrong number. HSC Andover confirmed that the work was scheduled for 7 September, not July, and I let you all know true position at 13.23 on Thursday . It was not until Friday at 13.07 that a DCC email finally caught up with correct situation. Phew!
Someone said that we should just be grateful that DCC have the right year, if not the right month, but I could not possibly comment on that.

Chris
5 July 2018 - TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF PLAISTERS LANE not in July!!
Dear all,
TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF PLAISTERS LANE
The information in the Newsbite circulated yesterday was incorrect. The work mentioned is actually planned for September, not July, when there will be a temporary closure of Plaisters Lane while a BT pole outside Hampton Lodge is replaced. The work is only expected to take one day, that being Friday 7 September. Sorry for the confusion, which was not of my making. I will explain in a future Newsbite!
Regards
Chris
3 July 2018 - Temporary closure Plaisters Lane
Dear all,
Cllr Ian Bruce has forwarded the following information:-
TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF PLAISTERS LANE.
DORSET COUNTY COUNCIL has issued a Notice under Section 14 [2] of the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984.
All vehicles will be prohibited from proceeding along PLAISTERS LANE from the junction with Coombe Valley Road to the junction with Sutton Close, a distance of approximately 700 metres. The order is needed in order to comply with Health and Safety Regulations which require the provision of safe working areas and to minimise likelihood of danger to Highway Users.
It will come into operation on the 7th July 2018 and remain in force for 5 days. However it is anticipated that the works will be completed by 08th July 2018. The closure will be in operation between 09:30hrs and 15:30hrs daily.
This Notice will enable HSC Solent on behalf of British Telecom safe access to renew a BT pole.

Chris
29 June 2018 - SPAM Meeting
Dear all,
Yesterday I detailed three things happening in the Village next week, but have been taken to task by Jez - and he is not one to disobey lightly - for failing to mention the monthly meeting of SPAM in the Springhead at 20.00 hrs on Monday 2 July. I do apologise to all Spamites for the omission, but such events do not figure largely on my radar as I am a lifetime teetotaller - my only vice is telling fibs. The England game is on Tuesday, so we should have a good turn-out to enjoy the great wit and repartee that always accompanies these gatherings. I'll see you there for a light libation of sparkling spring water.
Regards
Chris
28 June 2018 - Forthcoming happenings
Dear all,
Three forthcoming events for your delectation
The Chatty Craft Group.
As always on a Monday morning, this coming Monday, 2 July, the Chatty Craft Group will be meeting in the Mission Hall between 10am and noon. This companionable Group exchange conversation and learn craft and other skills over a delicious cup of tea/coffee. This is always a good way to start the week, so why not drop in and find out what is on offer.
The Sutton Poyntz Women's Institute.
The next meeting of the SP WI will be this coming Wednesday, 4 July in the Mission Hall between 2pm and 4pm. This month David Levi will be discussing 'Recycling in Dorset', so if you want to learn why we recycle and where our material goes, do drop in and hear what he has to say. This thriving and friendly Village group always welcome newcomers, so just drop in for an afternoon to see what they are about. There's no obligation to join on a first visit, and you are sure of a very warm welcome.
Summer Coffee Morning.
Then a little later next week, the fourth Coffee Morning of the Summer season is on Friday 6 July in the Mission Hall between 10.30am and noon. Lots to talk about after that wonderful Village Fayre, so don't miss the chance to enjoy the tea, cakes and conversation - and all for just £2.50, to the benefit of local charities. See you there.
Regards
Chris
