30 July 2017 - A busy weekend ahead
Dear all,
Events at the Mission Hall are like First buses - suddenly three come along together, which is the case this coming weekend.
The first of the trio is the Summer Coffee Morning on Friday, 4 August in the Mission Hall between 10.30 am and noon. Entry to this world of erudition, wit and wisdom is still only £2/person, which includes the usual excellent refreshments. Also, something I didn't know until recently, is that money from these events is going to various charities. In June it was £75 to MV Freedom - the charity offering boat rides around the bay for the disabled - and this month it will be Kartability, a charity which adapts go-karts for disabled and partially sighted children and adults to experience the thrills of go kart racing. So do drop in for a most enjoyable time and all in a good cause.
The following day, Saturday 5 August, it is the turn of the Village Vegetable Show at the Mission Hall. This opens at 9.30 am for competitors to display their wares, which costs 50p per class entered or £2 for unlimited entries. The cost to members of the public (which includes me) is £2.50 each, which includes voting rights, a cup of tea or coffee, and a piece of delicious homemade cake. Voting takes place from 10.30 to 11.30 am, and the prize-giving follows shortly afterwards plus the chance to watch the finale of the spud in a tub competition. Don't miss this - it's been known to make strong men cry. Proceeds will go to local charities.
And last, but by no means least, a chance to relax at the Alfresco Village Lunch, which starts at 1 pm the next day, Sunday 6 August. This is also at the Mission Hall, but out (I'm told that's what alfresco means; we don't use such words in the Welsh valleys) in the orchard in the glorious August sunshine. On arrival you will receive a welcome drink, followed by a main course and dessert, all for just £13/person. Bring a bottle of your own preferred tipple and unwind in an idyllic setting. A few tickets are still available from Maureen (835533), but be quick!
Best regards
Chris
16 July 2017 - Three forthcoming events for your diary
Dear all,
Sue Wintle and her loyal band of helpers are well advanced in their planning for the Cream Teas on Saturday 29 July. You can drop in at any time between 2.30pm and 4pm for a huge scone (I kid you not; Wagon Wheels may have become smaller over the years, but the Mission Hall scones have been getting larger!), jam and cream, all washed down with copious quantities of tea. The cost is a very reasonable £3.50/person, so treat yourself, family and friends to the enjoyment of another fine old English tradition - a cream tea in the garden, or in the Mission Hall if the weather is inclement. See you there.
Then there's the keenly contested annual Village Vegetable Show. This will take place on Saturday 5 August at - note the venue - the MISSION HALL, under the new stewardship of Jez Cunningham. Starting at 9.30 for competitors to display their wares, members of the public can vote from 10.30 to 11.30. Cost of entry is £3 per person, and this includes a cup of tea or coffee) and a piece of delicious homemade cake.
Following the rigours of the Vegetable Show there be time to relax at the Alfresco Village Lunch, which starts at 1pm the next day, Sunday 6 August. This is also at the Mission Hall, but out in the orchard. On arrival you will receive a welcome drink, followed by a main course and dessert, all for just £13/person. Bring your own bottle of wine, beer, ouzo or whatever is your personal preference and enjoy good food plus good company (for I will be there) in an idyllic setting. Tickets can be obtained from Maureen (835533), and they are selling fast!
Best regards
7 July 2017 - Moroccan Delights
Dear all,
Moroccan Delights are coming to the Mission Hall on Saturday 15 July!!
The Delights comprise Cous Cous plus two Tagines and salad, and the £15 per person cost includes the meal and appropriate accompaniments. Although no belly dancers have been booked to appear, a reliable source who shall remain nameless told me in confidence that she may do a 'jiggle' for us. The start time is 7 pm and you are invited to bring your own beverages.
Regards
Chris
4 July 2017 - Summer Coffee Morning on Friday
Dear all,
A reminder that the fourth Summer Coffee Morning will be held this coming Friday, 7 July, in the Mission Hall between 10.30 am and noon, at the bargain priceof £2/head. I think it's going to be another hot morning so there will be plenty of liquid refreshment to quench your thirst plus homemade cake to keep up your sugar levels until lunchtime. Sue and John Willows will also be coming along for a formal au revoir and a joint SP Society and Village Fayre expression of gratitude to them for their help to the village over the years, as described in the last Newsletter. Make sure you don't miss it, so see you there.
Regards
Chris
29 June 2017 - Pimms and Ploughmans evening this Saturday
Dear all,
A reminder about the Pimms & Ploughmans evening, this Saturday, 1 July, in the Mission Hall between - and note the new start time - 6 pm and a nominal 8 pm, though Bill says it will go on as long as everyone is enjoying the food, drink and good conversation. That's a dangerous statement, as in SP all three are always in abundance, so it may never finish!
Tickets are a very reasonable £10 per person, which reduces to £4 for the under 18’s and the under 5’s get in free. Bill Egerton has the tickets - let him know you are coming along by phoning 832872 or sending an email to
See you there, though if you are after the suggested good conversation you might want to give me a miss!
Regards
Chris
21 June 2017 - Meeting on SP Parish status
Dear all,
A reminder that this Saturday 24 June at 2.30pm there will be an open public meeting at the Mission Hall to provide information on, and to debate whether
SUTTON POYNTZ SHOULD APPLY FOR PARISH COUNCIL STATUS.
There are three knowledgeable speakers, Councillor John Parker, Hilary Trevorah and Councillor Ian Bruce who will cover all aspects of the subject, and the meeting will end with a public indicative vote. Everyone living or working in the village is eligible to vote, as established for the Neighbourhood Plan.
So which Way Forward For Sutton Poyntz? – You decide
Best regards

19 June 2017 - Pimms & Ploughmans evening
Dear all,
It's that time again when the Sutton Poyntz Society mix two very English ingredients not normally taken together. Yes, it's the Pimms & Ploughmans evening. This will take place on Saturday 1 July in the Mission Hall between 5 pm and 8 pm. You will not be expected to watch tennis or plant a field of corn, just enjoy yourself in good company on a lovely summer evening. Tickets are £10 per person, but only £4 for the under 18’s and under 5’s are free! So if you see a rather large four year old with a beard, that's me. Bill Egerton has the tickets - let him know you are coming along by phoning 832872 or sending an email to

13 June 2017 - Which Way Forward For Sutton Poyntz? – You decide
Dear all,
Which Way Forward For Sutton Poyntz? – You decide
There will be an open public meeting at the Mission Hall on Saturday 24 June at 2.30pm to provide information on, and debate, whether
SUTTON POYNTZ SHOULD APPLY FOR PARISH COUNCIL STATUS.
Weymouth and Portland Borough Council are currently holding a consultation period as they move towards becoming a Town Council under the unitary authority plans for Dorset, and there is an opportunity for Sutton Poyntz to consider how it would like to be managed in the future.
The speakers will be Councillor John Parker and Hilary Trevorah, Chairman and Chief Executive respectively of the Dorset Association of Town and Parish Councils and Councillor Ian Bruce from Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.
They will cover what a parish council does; possible outcomes to the changes underway; the implications of setting up a parish council and how the process would evolve.
At the end of the meeting there will be a public indicative vote, so it is really important that as many as possible attend to help reach a decision. All people living or working in the village are eligible to vote, the electorate being the same as that established for the Neighbourhood Plan.
This neighbourhood forum event is organised by the Sutton Poyntz Society. Light refreshments will be provided.
Please keep the date clear and make every effort to attend. The vital question is
Which Way Forward For Sutton Poyntz? – You decide
Best regards
