10 November 2017 - Important Dates for your Diaries
Some events for your diaries
Pop-up coffee shop
Maureen tells me that there will be another Pop-up coffee shop taking place in the Mission Hall on Saturday 25 November in aid of the BBC Children in Need Appeal. It will be open between 10am and 4pm, with refreshments available all day, plus homemade soup and rolls (the call is already out to our village bakers!) for lunch between 12pm to 2pm and stalls for browsing. Over £900 was raised last time to help the Appeal, which was a tremendous result. Mark the date in your diary NOW, and hope to see you there again this year.
23 October 2017 - Scout Jumble Sale
Dear all,
Mo Martin tells me that the Weymouth East Scout Group Autumn Jumble Sale will be taking place this Saturday, 28 October, at 2 pm at the Scutt Hall. This is one of the major fund raising events of the year and the money raised goes to the Scutt Hall funds for the benefit of all the youngsters who use the Hall. Mo says that jumble is required - that's clothes, books, bric-a-brac or anything saleable - so if you can help, please take anything you have to the Scutt Hall or ring John Sutherland (who, together with Jean Seymour, is helping Mo and Dave) on 832227, or contact any leader. Some help might be needed with sorting the jumble the day before, or on the day itself. Again John has details. The Hall is used throughout the year by so many of our youngsters, so any assistance will be gratefully received. And of course, if you are in search of a bargain, there will be plenty on offer, so do drop in at the Scutt Hall this Saturday afternoon. My In-house Adviser will see you there.
Regards
Chris
3 October 2017 - Coffee Mornings
Dear all,
Those of you that went along to the Coffee morning last Friday will know what a special occasion it was. The Macmillan charity obviously struck a chord widely, not only in Sutton Poyntz but throughout our local area, because the turn-out was enormous. With the donations at the door, the raffle and the sale of cakes Hilary tells me that the sum raised was in excess of £700! Hilary, her little helper (her words for her husband, not mine), the ladies in the kitchen and the many cake makers are to be congratulated on sending such a grand sum to such a good cause. During the morning I came across a little lad enjoying himself playing with one of the Macmillan balloons. Hopefully by the time he grows up research funded by such coffee mornings and more will have this awful disease on the retreat.
And while the force is with us, don't forget that the first of the regular Winter Coffee Mornings - always on the first Friday of the month - is this coming Friday, 6 October in the Mission hall between 10.30am and noon. A chance to banish the blues caused by the darkening evenings, lower temperatures and inclement weather with good conversation lubricated by coffee and delicious homemade cake. It only costs £2 per person, so I'll see you there?
Regards
Chris
26 September 2017 - Village Street Fayre Open Meeting
Village Street Fayre Open Meeting
Wednesday 4 October at 7.30
in the Blue Duck Bar, Springhead Pub
Dear all
As you can see David Langridge, our new chairman for the Sutton Poyntz Victorian Street Fayre, is holding an open evening next week to discuss the Fayre for next summer, garner support, help new villagers understand what is involved and put together a committee to help organise and run the event.
The Village Street Fayre is planned for Sunday 24 June 2018 and is an event that really embraces the community spirit of the village, as many of you will be aware.
If you are interested in learning more, pledging commitment to help or are interested in a committee role please go along on Wednesday or if Wednesday is not convenient please e-mail David on

23 September 2017 - Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Support
Dear all,
I promised you further details of the Macmillan Coffee Morning which Hilary is organising in the Mission Hall next Friday, 29 September. This is part of the World's Biggest Coffee Morning and will take place between 10.30am and noon. I cannot better Hillary's words when she says "I haven't organised a coffee morning like this before so I hope I'm doing it right. Sadly all of us have been touched by cancer in one way or another and Macmillan is such a good cause. I just want as many people as possible to come and make it a success." There will be lots of gorgeous homemade cakes to go with your coffee (or tea if you prefer), hall decorations and plenty of good conversation. So, for a donation of £2 a head - or more if you wish - help Hilary send as much as possible from Sutton Poyntz to a most worthwhile charity. All contributions will help Macmillan make sure that no one has to face cancer alone.
So it's Friday 29 September, Mission Hall 10.30 - 12.00
See you there.
Best regards
Chris
29 August 2017 - Coffee mornings galore
Dear all,
After exhaustive and exhausting research I have found out that this coming Friday's Coffee Morning will be supporting the Chesil Sailability charity. At 11am a representative from the Charity give a short account of the good work that they perform. Also, as it is the time of year that keen gardeners can grow an ample sufficiency of fruit and vegetables, I thought it would be a good idea for there to be an 'exchange table' on the morning for you to bring, take and/or swop anything you might have for those items someone else brings along. So don't miss it - between 10.30 and 12 this Friday1 September in the Mission Hall. Entry is only £2, which includes tea/coffee and a delicious homemade cake.
This is the last Summer Charity Coffee Morning of this year, but the normal Winter service will resume in October through to March, always the first Friday in the month.
And that's not all, because there will be an extra Macmillan Coffee Morning on Friday 29 September. Put this in your diary now; further details to follow.
Best regards
Chris
25 August 2017 - Coffee and Scouts
Dear all,
Not the Last of the Summer Wine, but definitely the last of the Summer series of Coffee Mornings is being held this coming Friday, 1 September in the Mission Hall between 10.30 am and noon. Last time the money collected went to Kartability, and Mark and Chickee (sorry, I only know his nickname) came along to describe how they adapt go-karts for disabled and partially sighted children and adults to experience the thrills of go kart racing. The next collection is also going to an excellent charity, whose name I carefully wrote down, then lost! I would ask Maureen, but I'm afraid she will ban me for being so careless, so I'm going to sneak in disguised. The cost as ever is only £2/person, which includes the usual excellent refreshments, so do go along and see the summer out in fine style. I'll be there, but you might not recognise me.
Mo and Dave Martin have once again generously offered their time to organise the Weymouth East Scout & Guide Jumble Sale, which is one of the major annual fundraising events supporting our local youngsters. This will be held in the Scutt Hall on Saturday 28 October, which may seem a good way off, but there is, of course, an excellent reason for the advance notice. They desperately need good quality items that they can sell and it is never too early to think about collecting them. If you already have anything that they could sell - clothes, bric-a-brac, books etc - or are likely to be turning out such items in the near future, or know anyone who is, please contact Mo/Dave on 836322.

Chris
23 August 2017 - Sutton Poyntz History Evening
At the Sutton Poyntz History Evening you will be taken back over a century to see vintage Dorset brought to life.
Debra Hearne and Ali Grant, part of the Windrose Rural Media Trust Handing Down Heritage Project - a bit of a mouthful but an interesting and worthwhile cause nonetheless - will be showing films from Dorset’s past at the Mission Hall on Saturday 9 September starting at 7pm.
Windrose preserve cine film recordings of village and farming life from the turn of the last century through to the 1960s including scenes of
-
· farming in the 1940s when many farmers were in transition from using horse power to machines
-
· Mayday celebrations in Martinstown
-
· harbour activities in Weymouth in the 1960s
-
· Cider making on the Dare family farm at Shave Cross which Debra says “...shows a lot of cider drinking, storytelling and wild behaviour among the elder generation!” (though I find it difficult to believe that Senior Citizens of any generation engage in wild behaviour. Ed)
Debra and Ali would also like to record your experiences of living in Sutton Poyntz. Capturing these precious memories is a wonderful way to hand down your heritage for future generations, so let them know on the night if you can/would like to help.
Mark the date in your diaries now - the film show is on Saturday 9th September at the Mission Hall; doors open at 18.30 and the show starts at 19.00.
There is no charge for admission, and there will be a glass of wine available at the end of the show. Donations to cover the cost and/or towards the Windrose Trust's activities will be gratefully received.
The free tickets are available from Bill Egerton (832872) or at
